Four men break 13:17 for the first time in the same 5K road race; 27th edition draws more than 8,500 entrants

By Bert Rosenthal

CARLSBAD, Calif. – (April 1, 2012) – The 27th Carlsbad 5000 had a familiar ring with repeat champions, fast times and windy conditions. When it ended Sunday, Dejen Gebremeskel of Ethiopia won the men’s championship for the second year in a row, clocking 13 minutes, 11 seconds, tying for the fourth-fastest time ever on the roads and another Ethiopian, Tirunesh Dibaba, regained the women’s title she won in 2005, running 15:01. The times were impressive, considering the breezes blowing across the course.

Especially the men’s. The top four finishers all were among the Top Ten all-time at Carlsbad. Runner-up Hagos Gebrhiwet, a 17-year-old from Ethiopia, finished in 13:14, followed by Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya, the 2010 winner and 2011 second-placer, also in 13:14, and Tariku Bekele of Ethiopia in 13:16.

It was the first time four runners had eclipsed 13:17 in the same 5K road race. In addition, Alistair Cragg of Ireland broke the European record by four seconds, winding up sixth in 13:26.

The women’s race was not as close as the men’s, as Dibaba, the 2008 Olympic champion at 5000 and 10,000 meters, ran away from the field over the closing stages and won by 12 seconds over runner-up Werknesh Kidane of Ethiopia (15:13). Pauline Korikwiang of Kenya was third in 15:22, and another 17-year-old Ethiopian, Gotytom Gebreslase, finished fourth in 15:32. Aheza Kiros of Ethiopia, the 2009 and 2011 champion, placed fifth in 15:41.

Gebremeskel was a virtual unknown before arriving in Carlsbad for the first time in 2010, when he finished second to Kipchoge. Since then, he has become one of the world’s elite distance runners. He earned his first global medal, taking a bronze at the 2011 World Championships over 5,000 meters and was fifth at the World Indoor Championships over 3,000 meters last month.

“The indoor 3,000 prepared me to run fast (Sunday),” Gebremeskel, 22, said.

Gebremeskel ran a smart tactical race. He let Kipchoge set the pace into the wind over the first four kilometers. He then broke toward the front with Gebrhiwet and held off his two closest pursuers.

“Kipchoge was pushing the pace early,” Gebremeskel said. “The last one K I was pushing myself.”

Kipchoge said he had hoped to run under 13:10, but the wind thwarted his plan.

“I can’t feel comfortable with everyone on my back,” he said. “I thought I would catch up with him (Gebremeskel) in the final K, but it was too windy.”

The result gave Kipchoge a first, second and third in that order over his the last three Carlsbad races.

“Maybe I’ll run faster next year,” Kipchoge said. “I’m not going to run fourth.”

Despite his declining finishes, Kipchoge enjoys running at Carlsbad. “There’s no other 5K course like it in the world,” he said. “It’s the best place in the world to run a 5K. And the crowd is the best. It makes me want to move.”

Dibaba, 26, would tend to agree. Coming to Carlsbad for the first time in 2002 as a 17-year-old, she finished second. Returning again in 2005, she won, and now, seven years later, she’s a champion again.

This was Dibaba’s third victory in three races this year, after missing 16 months with a stress fracture in her right shin. In spite of her obvious fitness and her recovery from injury, Dibaba is not a shoo-in to make the Ethiopian team for the London Olympics. She hopes to qualify again for both the 5,000 and 10,000, but her place on the national team will be determined by the three-fastest times in the Ethiopian trials.

Nevertheless, Dibaba said, “I’m ready for the Olympics.”

“I don’t have any more bad (physical) feelings,” she added. “I knew all along I would come back.”

Still, she was hoping to run a little faster time Sunday.

“I’m happy about the race,” she said, “but I didn’t run a fast time because of the wind.”

Race day began at 7:00am with the men’s Masters 40 and over, the first of nine race events, which was won handily by Kevin Castille, 40, in 14:47. Polish Olympian Dororta Gruca, 41, won the women’s Masters 16:58 to win the $1000 top prize. Event weekend also featured the 23rd Junior Carlsbad kids race on Saturday, which welcomed more than 2,500 participants.

Ethiopian Great Tirunesh Dibaba Leads Women’s Field at Carlsbad 5000
World-Renowned 5K Celebrates 27th Running this Sunday, April 1

Carlsbad, Calif. – March 30, 2012 – Reigning Olympic 5,000 and 10,000 meter gold medalist Tirunesh Dibaba will return to the Carlsbad 5000 for the first time since 2005 when she equaled the world record at the ‘World’s Fastest 5k’. On Sunday, Dibaba will take another step in her bid to repeat as a double Olympic champion, leading a strong international women’s field at the 27th running of the Carlsbad 5000.

The 26-year-old Dibaba took home a bronze medal at the Olympics in the 5,000m in 2004, has won world championship gold in the 5,000m in 2003 and 2005, and also captured world championship gold in the 10,000m in 2005 and 2007. Off the track, she’s won five IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

This will be Dibaba’s fourth Carlsbad race, and like in most of her other competitions, she has had good success here. She made her Carlsbad debut in 2002 as a 16-year-old and finished an impressive second to Deena Kastor’s then world record of 14:54. A year later, she placed third when Berhane Adere equaled Kastor’s world mark. In 2005, Dibaba finally won at Carlsbad, breaking the tape in 14:51 and matching Paula Radcliffe’s then world road record.

Dibaba’s mark was the 15th world record broken or tied at Carlsbad since its inception in 1985. The total now is 16, including Ethiopian Meseret Defar’s current world record of 14:46 here in 2006, along with eight U.S. records, and numerous national and age-group marks, hence why Carlsbad is known as the “World’s Fastest 5K.” Defar established the current world mark of 14:46 in 2006 and Kastor set the U.S. mark of 14:54 in 2002.

Despite the presence of defending champion Aheza Kiros of Ethiopia (who also won in 2009 and was the runner-up in 2010) and a contingent of other strong international competitors, Dibaba is an overwhelming favorite in Sunday’s race.

“This is a very important year for me as I prepare to defend my Olympic titles,” she said. “I’m very excited to be returning to Carlsbad this year as I build up to London 2012. I have great memories of racing here. It was one of my first races outside of Ethiopia back in 2002. Carlsbad has had many great champions and I’m proud of my win here. I’m so happy to return as an Olympic champion and world record-holder and I will try my best to win another title. After a tough 2011 with injuries and setbacks, it’s been great to get back to racing. I’m happy to be back on track again. Carlsbad is perfect for my next step back.”

In addition to Kiros, the women’s field includes Kenya’s Pauline Korikwiang, who finished second at Carlsbad last year; Ethiopia’s Gotytom Gebreslase, the World Youth Champion over 3000 meters who recently finished second to Defar at the New Balance Boston Indoor Games 3000m in February; and Ethiopia’s Werknesh Kidane, who was third at Carlsbad in 2002 and has five bronze medals from the World Cross Country Championships.

“There are four or five women who can challenge Dibaba, but if she’s at the top of her game, she’ll be tough to beat. She’s always tough to beat,” said Matt Turnbull, elite athlete coordinator for the Carlsbad 5000. “The pinnacle of the sport is to get the Olympic champion to come to your race and she’s the undisputed No. 1. It’s a great feather in our cap to get her to come to our race. She’s a true global champion.”

The elite field of world-class athletes will be joined by the best masters runners in the U.S. for the 27th running of one of the marquee events on the international road race circuit. Race day begins at 7:05am with the Masters Men 40 and over, the first of nine races that will take place throughout the morning. The elite women’s race starts at 12:17 pm.

Defending Champion, Two-time Olympic Medalist Headline Carlsbad 5000
Anthony Famiglietti leads Americans at 27th running of the ‘World’s Fastest 5K’

Byline: Bert Rosenthal

CARLSBAD, Calif. – March 28, 2012 – A race renowned for fast runners and world records once again welcomes a stellar field for the elite invitational at the 27th annual Carlsbad 5000 on Sunday, April 1, 2012.

Headlining the men’s field is Ethiopia’s Dejen Gebremeskel, the defending champion and last year’s 5,000-meter bronze medalist at the World Championships; Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge, the 2011 Carlsbad runner-up who was ranked No. 1 in the world over 5,000 meters in 2010 and has silver and bronze medals in the 5,000 from the past two Olympic Games; and Ethiopia’s Tariku Bekele, a former world champion over 3,000 meters indoors and with a best of 12:54.45 over 5,000 meters.

Don’t count out American Anthony Famiglietti on Sunday when he faces some of the world’s top long-distance runners at the Carlsbad 5000. It’s not in his DNA. Famiglietti believes he’s in a good place now and can contend with the world’s best.

“I’m happy to be healthy and confident to be able to go to the starting line with the best in the world,” said Famiglietti, 33, of Davidson, N.C. “I don’t get intimidated. I feel like I can run with the best in the world when I’m on. I’m not backing down.”

Famiglietti’s forte is not the 5K, it’s the 3,000-meter steeplechase, an event in which he has twice been an Olympian. However, he has raced and mastered distances ranging from 1,500 meters to the half-marathon. His 10,000-meter best of 27 minutes, 37.74 seconds and his mile PR of 3:55.71 were set within four weeks of each other. Two weeks ago, he won the 49er 5K Classic at UNC Charlotte in his first outdoor track race of the season, and the following day, he won an 8K road race in 23:56.

He is a six-time U.S. champion, including road titles at 5K, 8K and 15K, he was also the steeplechase gold medalist at the 2001 World University Games and the steeplechase bronze medalist at the 2003 World University Games. In 2007, he ran 13:11.93 for 5K, the fastest by an American on U.S. soil.

“This is the strongest field we’ve had in the last four years,” said Matt Turnbull, elite athlete coordinator for the Carlsbad 5000. “It should be a very closely contested race. So many guys are capable of breaking 13 minutes on the track, but when it comes to Carlsbad, it just hasn’t happened. It shows how good the world record is. It’s been there since 2001.”

The world record for 5K on the roads of 13:00 was set by Kenya’s Sammy Kipketer at Carlsbad in 2000. He matched that time a year later.

“Gebremeskel has done some amazing things since winning last year,” said Turnbull. “If he and Kipchoge, who’s in great shape, can help each other, maybe we can get the world record. But it’s all about racing, not necessarily times. I’ll be happy with a 13:01 or 13:02, if we get a close race down to the finish.”

Famiglietti was in shape to break the American record in 2009, but just missed the American mark of 13:24 set by Marc Davis at Carlsbad in 1996. This time, Famiglietti could take down the record if he tries to keep pace with the elite internationals.

“He’s up against the world’s best,” Turnbull added. “He and Alistair Cragg (of Ireland) are front-runners and should hang on as long as they can.”

Famiglietti’s front-of-the-pack tactics earned him the nickname of “Iron Man” earlier in his career “because I went out so fast,” he said. “I’ve learned to adapt over time. Winning is good, but running fast is better.”

Race weekend kicks off with a pre-registration party on Friday, March 28 for the Junior Carlsbad hosted at the Carlsbad Village Faire. On Saturday, March 31st more than 2,500 junior racers, age 12 and under, will take part in one of the eleven age group races. All runners receive a t-shirt and finisher’s medal for their efforts. Awards will be presented to the top junior athletes ages five through twelve.

Registration for both the Junior Carlsbad and Carlsbad 5000 is available race weekend. For more information or to view the full race day schedule, visit Carlsbad5000.com or call 800-311-1255.
